Remix your adventure with alternate industrial-techno theme versions of Knuckles, Amy, Miles, Big, and more!
Looking back to the launch of the Dreamcast in 1998 in Japan, Sega really pulled out all the stops to not only introduce a brand new, forward -thinking console of the era, but to also reintroduce and reinvent its world famous mascot with a new, bold, edgier character design (those green eyes!) to complement his first full-fledged 3D platforming adventure.
Music has always played an integral part to the Sonic series, and Sonic Adventure is no exception. Sega's Sonic Adventure soundtracks have gone on to become highly regarded fan favorites of the series; boasting an incredible array of talent from composers and sound designers Kenichi Tokoi, Masaru Setsumaru, Fumie Kumatani, Takahairo Fukada, Jun Senoue (of Sega / Crush 40 fame), and more. The Adventure soundtracks skillfully blended various musical styles together (Melodic Hard Rock, Hip-Hop, VGM, Pop, etc...) for an all-encompassing audio journey that really took the Sonic Adventure games to the next level (even having a unique musical style representing each main character).
With Sega reintroducing its flagship mascot to the world with a more late 90's edginess, some of the era's most notable Industrial / Techno artists were invited to offer some darker, grittier tones (befitting of the album cover) to some of Adventure's most notable tracks; resulting in a stark contrast to the mainly bright, melodic, fun color palette Sonic games have become known for.
Including ten tracks from guests such as Kevin Moore (ex-Dream Theater, Chroma Key, OSI), Steve Tushar (Carbon 40) and more, and including remixes for Unknown from M.E. (Theme of Knuckles), My Sweet Passion (Theme of Amy), Believe in Myself (Theme of Miles), Lazy Days (Theme of Big), and Open Your Heart (Main Theme of Sonic Adventure), there's much to explore in this interesting footnote in Sega / Sonic musical lore.
The tracks on Sonic Adventure Remix reference the source material in some creative and interesting ways, however of note, is that the majority of the songs on offer do often differ from the original songs dramatically, providing just a dash of the original songs' DNA. While this album may not ultimately be everyone's preferred style of Chili Dog with it's more streamlined, darker-toned approach, it remains an interesting side-project that showed Sega's experimental, adventurous side in broadening Sonic's appeal with the release of the Dreamcast in Japan.
