Originally released on 02/26/1998 in Japan, Burning Rangers is celebrating 24 years of futuristic fire extinguishing fun this month. With an awesome cast of characters including Shou, Chris, Tillis, Big Landman, and Lead Phoenix, Burning Rangers delivers unforgettable set-pieces, character designs, and audio courtesy of director Naoto Ohshima, producer Yuji Naka, and the legendary Sonic Team.
One very unique, and forward-thinking design aspect of Burning Rangers was the implementation of the Voice-Navigation System, which offered fully-spoken dialogue (presented by character Chris Partn in the game) that really enhanced the tension and atmosphere of the game.
Chris guides the Rangers through the action onscreen with spoken navigation, (like 90s GPS!) so audio is an integral gameplay element to Burning Rangers, and it’s an element that really made Burning Rangers a daring, and brave title that has really stood the test of time.
Also of note is the incredible soundtrack by Naofumi Hataya, Fumie Kumatani, and Masaru Setsumaru, with some additional incredible guest spots on vocals and guitar by the legendary Takenobu Mitsuyoshi (Daytona USA) and Jun Senoue (Sonic Adventure).
Now’s a great time to fly high with grace and pride and revisit this underrated, and exclusive Sega Saturn classic.
